Kent XC League - Senior Women

Stanhill Farm, Wilmington
We had a lovely sunny start to the cross country season at the first Kent League match yesterday. Over the last couple of years the squad of senior women has built up to a very respectable 20 runners varying in age from teens to sixties. The course at Stanhill Farm is fairly flat so the lack of rain and mud ensured that it was going to be a fast 5.3k race- won by Jo Hickmann Dunne from B and B in 18:28. Stanhill Farm is a popular venue and a good warm up for the more testing course at Somerhill. As ever illness, work and injury meant that not everyone was able to turn out but it was just great to see so many light blue vests. We are beginning to get strength and depth to the team and it would be wonderful if these good numbers continue throughout the season. Success for the team is good but the most important thing is that everyone enjoys herself and feels welcome. Hopefully the new Cambridge Harries grand prix for the Kent races will provide a bit of friendly internal competition particularly as it is designed to reward those who turn out regularly.

Emily Gelder led the team home in 19th place and 4th vet in an excellent time of 21:39. Rose Baker who represented Great Britain in a marathon in Manchester only last Sunday and who had (of course) also done the Bexley parkrun only that morning was the second team member back. She had got boxed in at the start and initially found it hard to get past people but was soon zooming past those who had set off at a pace they couldn’t sustain. Nevertheless it meant that she couldn’t catch the lead groups. Sue Dixon made up the team of three. Christine Bond, Marian Hine and Sally Carr completed the team of six. It was a great run from Marian-her first cross country for seven years (we think). Good runs too from Donna Martin who was seconds behind Sally and Kate Mitchell who was turning out for us the first time over the country. Susan Edwards, Angela Ford, Maria Macdonald, Carly Martin and U20 Shelley Clarke made up the rest of the squad.
